Hey y'all. I know everyone is going through their own shit so I understand if you don't want to read about mine, but if you do here it is. This is a long one: The extremely abridged version is that my old boss sucked and sold the business under our noses to someone who was astronomically worse. Our new boss made us a bunch of promises about how he would be there all the time to train and learn how to best support us, amongst a bunch of other things, but within the first week of his ownership it was really clear he had not intention of even being a body in the shop. We were already extremely understaffed because of my old boss’s shitty management but I and another coworker got covid within his first week. The staff was begging him to come in every day because we were slammed and all working well beyond our availability to support each other. It took him a month to hold his first staff meeting; we made sure to let him know before-hand that we felt abandoned and under-supported where we really needed his help every single day so that he would be prepared to take some accountability for that and be prepared to discuss it. He decided that was unreasonable and instead yelled at us for an hour that were bad at our jobs and that everyone hates us, which were both very untrue. Everyone loved us lol. After this meeting, we decided that even though our new boss was a petulant baby and a clear misogynist (there was one cis man on staff) that we all still wanted to work together and that we should try to unionize to force our bosses hand into treating us well and making the job worth it. He called a follow-up meeting for the next week, and when we got there he had gutted the cafe, making it clear the whole thing was under work. To make a very painful and LONG saga very short, over the next 3 months he would constantly tell us new dates of opening the would make it impossible for us to get temporary unemployment or new jobs (if we wanted to return, which we did because we were trying to unionize), would privately and publicly promise us our jobs back on social media to cover his ass for closing the business with 12 hours notice as well as to us many other promises that weren’t kept and other blatant lies. After THREE MONTHS of promises and run-around he fired us all via text on the real opening date. We issued a statement that is actively destroying his reputation and ruining his business, so at least there’s that, but for me that was my last ditch attempt at food service and the service industry at large. The whole experience was traumatizing. I ate through all my savings of entirely money I made from teaching that I hoped to use to move, and now I’m trapped in a place I hate with no money and not a lot of agency. The silver lining is that I was able to make my rent payment with a solo art show I was given where I made an entire body of work in two and a half weeks and sold almost everything. I am now going back to stick n poke tattoos, and I’m trying to commit to this harder too. I want to be able to take this opportunity to make things work with my art and my content creation, and I’d love your support. I apologize for my lulls in activity, all these experiences have really disempowered me and depression really ravaged my ability to do anything for months.
