But when I was selecting the colors I wanted to use I decided to use the paint to give a visual representation to something that, at times, feels invisible. Despite what some of us have been taught, you cannot tell what a persons sexual orientation is just by looking at them. Sexual orientation is also NOT something that falls into the false binary of “gay or straight”. As someone who identifies as bisexual I am familiar with phrases such as “it’s just a phase” and “well are you gay or are you straight”. Not only are these statements harmful, but they contribute to what I can only describe as identity erasure. Bisexuality is valid. It’s not a phase. It’s not a form of purgatory that people live in until they can figure out if they’re gay or straight.
