Ingredients:
1 package of ground sausage (If only cased sausages are available, simply slice them open and remove the meat.)
1 box of penne pasta
1 medium jar of pasta sauce
1 medium container of ricotta cheese
1 small to medium bag of shredded mozzarella cheese
1 white onion (optional)
1 green, yellow, or red bell pepper (optional)
Instructions:
1) Boil the Pasta
Fill a pot with water (about 65–75% full), add a generous amount of salt, and bring it to a rolling boil. Once boiling, add your pasta and cook to your preferred tenderness—typically 8 to 12 minutes.
2) Cook the Sausage
Preheat a frying pan over medium heat and cook the sausage until golden brown. Most sausages have enough fat to cook in their own juices, but if yours is lean, add a little oil of your choice.
3) Prepare the Vegetables (Optional)
If using onions or peppers, dice them to your preferred size. For larger, chunkier bites, go with a rough chop. Using the same pan you cooked the sausage in, sauté the veggies in the leftover fat until they become soft and semi-translucent. If needed, add extra oil.
4) Combine Everything
Return the cooked sausage to the pan with the vegetables (if using). Stir in the pasta sauce and ricotta cheese, mixing well until everything is heated through. Then season to taste. I suggest seasonings such as: garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and red chili flakes.
5) Add Pasta & Cheese
Toss the cooked pasta into the pan and mix until well coated. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top and let it melt.
