The deer horn glue has a gelatinous consistency and needs to be watered down with hot water. I use a 1:1 ratio of hot water to glue. Then I get the pine soot (comes in a powdered form, very similar to charcoal) and add a teaspoon of that to my pestle and mortar. I mix it up and get rid of all the clumps. Then I dab a little bit onto a smaller plate and use that to draw with.
