Breathing deeply means expanding your rib cage- not your belly- with each inhale. Our lungs live in our rib cage. Forget what you’ve been told about “breathing into your belly.” No air fills the belly. In fact, an expanding belly only creates the illusion of a deep breath. To take truly deep breathes expand the rib cage, in all directions; front, sides, and back with each inhale. And with each exhale feel your rib cage draw in on itself from all directions. If visualizing helps, imagine a balloon inflating and deflating within your rib cage with each breath. Now go forth, breathe deep, and live as long as a sea turtle.
