Ancient Yogis wrote about four fundamental motivations: Fear, Desire, Duty, and Love.
Fear is only a bad thing when we allow it to paralyze us, or when we do not heed its warning. Fear is an important guide when we deal with it mindfully.
Desire is key toward any kind of personal progress in our life. We mainly run into problems with desire when it focuses on material possessions and the mis-guided belief that material objects can bring us real and lasting happiness.
This leaves Duty and Love. When we are guided by these two motivators our life begins to have a purpose; we find meaning in our actions. We leave a positive imprint on everyone we encounter.
A good touchstone is to always dig for the “why” behind the “want.” When you want something, before you pursue it, ask yourself why you want it. If the answer is fear or desire based, think a little harder before moving forward. It doesn’t mean you don’t move forward, but getting to the root motivator helps temper expectations so you do not set yourself up for disappointment or frustration.
If your “why” is rooted in duty or love, you cannot go wrong. Ask yourself, “Am I wanting this or doing this to serve others?” If your answer is yes, again, you cannot go wrong.
Serve others with respect, grace, and kindness, and the universe will hold you up and support you with abundance.✌️
