I joke about this to get everyone’s attention. But I am totally serious. We live in a culture that is steeped in fear, shame, and guilt around many, many things. But especially around the topic of sex, and even more so when it comes to gay sex. We’ve all been told this story by others, and once we’ve heard it over and over from different sources, we begin to tell it to ourselves. And we begin to believe it. It is a story of separation; separation from others, and even more damaging, separation from ourself.
Whenever I work with a man who has spent most of his life in the closet I always remind him at the end of the session that the guilt and shame he may feel is not his own. Someone else along the way gave it to him. Instead of repeating and reinforcing that story of separation, what he, and we, must do is start to tell ourself other stories; stories of love for others, and just as importantly, stories of love for ourself.✌️
