Tantra means to weave. It refers to bringing things together, and the power this unleashes. One of the most effective ways to break out of our misguided belief that we are each alone is to connect with others. Eye contact is how we achieve this. It is that simple and at the same time, profoundly difficult. Making eye contact can be very uncomfortable for a great many people. A way to ease into it is to sit across from one another with your eyes closed. Begin by syncing up your breath and then when you are both ready slowly open your eyes. There are some who say to look into the left eye of your partner because that is where his soul resides. I cannot say that this is definitively true. But I can say that looking into each other’s left eye feels more comfortable and natural because we read from left to right. So our eyes are used to going to the left first. Whichever eye you choose stay with it. Jumping back and forth between eyes is the equivalent to constantly looking away for brief moments. Just settle in and gaze into each other’s eyes. You’re not looking for anything. Mainly what you are each doing is letting down your guard. This can feel like a giant relief. The other thing you are doing is giving each other your attention. Our attention is the most profound, important gift we can give to each other.
