Wine barrels are not just for a wow factor display like what is shown here at Opus One. They provide texture and/or aromatics to a wine depending on the type of oak, the grain, the toast, how many times the barrel has been used and how long the wine stays in barrel. It’s a winemaking tool with a lot of power that can either enhance a wine or destroy a wine. Not all wines see oak during the fermentation or aging process but a vast majority of wines, especially red wines, do spend some time in an oak barrel. These are spendy, especially when hand painted with valuable wine so people like me can take a cool picture. 🤣
